Congratulations to Our New Jersey Students
On June 6, 2015, Open Door students and volunteer teachers gathered for its graduation ceremony and year-end celebration at the Hudson Hall Community Center in West New York. Each Monday and Tuesday since last September, our volunteer teachers had devoted their evenings to encourage and instruct our students in English and computer literacy. Our students too, had attended class after long days at work to study English. We came together to thank our teachers for their labor of love, to recognize the hard work of our students, and to celebrate together as one community. Pastor Flores, pastor of Nazareth Baptist Church in West New York, gave remarks, and a level 4 student, Jose, spoke of the difference his teacher, Stan Tyvoll, had made in his life. A local Salvadoran Folk Dance Troupe entertained guests with their colorful costumes and spirited dances. The teachers presented certificates of participation and advancement to their students, and those students who had perfect attendance received certificates and prizes. The evening closed with a potluck dinner and cake.
